Researchers at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and TWI Technology Centre (Wales) have won two prestigious awards at the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT)’s 61st Annual Conference, held at The Telford Conference Centre earlier this month.
The research teams were awarded the John Grimwade Medal 2023 and the Ron Halmshaw Award 2023 in recognition of the outstanding quality and impact of their contributions to the field of non-destructive testing (NDT) and industrial radiography.
The John Grimwade Medal, awarded for the best paper published in Insight – the Journal of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing – was presented to Mr Sam Hurrell, Professor Peter Charlton, Dr Stephen Mosey, Dr Owen Rees-Lloyd, and Dr Richard Lewis for their paper “Study on the Steering Capability of a Meander-Line Coil EMAT.” The study explores advanced electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) technology and its potential in steering ultrasonic waves, offering significant improvements in NDT applications.
This is the third time for UWTSD and TWI Technology Centre (Wales) to receive the award, having previously done so in 2018 for their paper: “Virtual Source Aperture imaging and calibration for ultrasonic inspections through dual- layered media for non-destructive testing” and in 2023 for their paper: “Efficient algebraic image reconstruction technique for computed tomography”. This continued recognition highlights the long-term success of the partnership in advancing the field of NDT.
Also during the conference, Dr Ross Hanna, Dr Mark Sutcliffe, Professor Peter Charlton, Dr David Carswell, and Dr Stephen Mosey were awarded the Ron Halmshaw Award 2023 for their paper: “Volume Integral Model for Algebraic Image Reconstruction and Computed Tomography.” This accolade is given for the best paper in Insight related to industrial radiography or radiology. The research focuses on cutting-edge techniques for image reconstruction and computed tomography, offering new insights and advancements in the imaging domain.
Both awards highlight the successful collaboration between UWTSD and TWI Technology Centre (Wales), reflecting their commitment to driving innovation in non-destructive testing technologies. The research outputs not only advance academic knowledge but also have practical implications for industries relying on these advanced inspection methodologies for safety and quality control.
