The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Wicker as its new Head of the University’s Apprenticeships Unit. Matthew takes up the role at a pivotal time as the University continues to strengthen its position as a leading provider of degree apprenticeships in Wales and across the UK.
In his new role, Matthew, who is based at our Swansea Waterfront campus, will oversee the development and delivery of innovative apprenticeship programmes that align with the evolving needs of learners and employers. With over a decade of experience in education management, youth development, and regional engagement, Matthew brings a strategic and collaborative approach to workforce development.
Prior to joining UWTSD in May 2025, Matthew held several senior positions focused on employability, widening participation, and strengthening education-to-employment pathways. His extensive experience in forging partnerships with employers, local authorities, and public sector organisations will be instrumental in further enhancing UWTSD’s apprenticeship offering.
Simon Young, Director of Academic Services at UWTSD said: “We are delighted to welcome Matthew Wicker to the University. His appointment marks an important step forward in our mission to deliver high-quality, employer-led apprenticeship programmes.
“Matthew’s extensive experience and collaborative ethos will be invaluable as we continue to grow our apprenticeship provision and strengthen our partnerships across industry and the public sector. His leadership will play a key role in ensuring our learners gain the skills and confidence they need to thrive in a rapidly changing workforce.”
Matthew said: “It’s an honour to join UWTSD at such an exciting time for apprenticeships in Wales. I’m passionate about creating opportunities that empower individuals and help businesses grow through talent development. I look forward to building on the University’s strong foundation and working with employers and learners to shape programmes that truly make an impact.”
UWTSD currently delivers degree apprenticeships to over 100 employers, ranging from SMEs to NHS Trusts and local authorities. The University’s flexible and employer-responsive programmes provide learners with opportunities to gain higher education qualifications while developing real-world skills in the workplace.
Degree apprenticeships at UWTSD are designed to support both upskilling and reskilling, enabling people already in employment to progress their careers and contribute more effectively to their organisations.
