Ford Achieves Zero Waste to Landfill in Europe

Ford has achieved zero waste to landfill at all of its manufacturing plants in Europe, with the company’s global achievements detailed in the 2016 Sustainability Report.

Over the last five years, the car manufacturer has eliminated 6,000 tonnes of waste each year that was previously sent to landfill sites. The saving is equal to the amount of waste discarded annually by a town with a population of 12,500 people, for the 1.2 million vehicles produced by Ford in Europe every year.

The company has used a range of innovative measures to achieve the goal of zero waste to landfill, including the briquetting of grinding sludge form the Dagenham engine plant in Britain which means the oil can be re-used in the production process.

Meanwhile, at the company’s Spanish plant in Valencia, Ford has pioneered the generation of alternative fuel from waste that was unable to be recycled.

Manager of Ford’s Environmental Quality Office Europe, Andreas Reiss, believes that the eradication of landfill site usage is a fantastic achievement for the company and one that can act as a catalyst for further improvement in areas such as electricity and water usage reductions as Ford of Europe tries to meet the firm’s global sustainability ambitions.

The latest European plants to achieve the zero waste to landfill status are Craiova in Romania and Valencia, which join the UK’s Dagenham and Bridgens plants, Bordeaux in France and Saarlouis and Cologne in Germany.

Recently, Ford published the 2016 Sustainability Report that highlights the company’s global achievements in areas such as safety, quality, supply chain sustainability and sustainable manufacturing.

The firm says it will maintain its full commitment to the running of a responsible business that will treat its communities, employees, customers and the planet with respect.

Last year, Ford in Europe set out a new Energy Management Operating System within the Ford Production System.
