Companies working with Make UK, the manfacturers’ organisation, are investing in training to provide employees with a baseline knowledge of net zero and raise awareness of how it can be delivered within an organisation.
Despite the growing emphasis on environmental responsibility, a recent study by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) has revealed a significant knowledge gap regarding the concept of net zero among the UK population. The study found that nearly two-thirds of individuals are unaware of net zero, and only 1 in 8 feel informed about the topic.
Manufacturers working with Make UK recognise that this lack of awareness presents a considerable challenge for businesses aiming to meet net zero goals. Organisations often have specific net zero targets as part of their environmental strategies. These strategies are not only crucial for responsible environmental stewardship but also offer strategic advantages such as improved reputation, cost savings, regulatory compliance, and access to new markets. However, achieving these goals becomes difficult when a significant portion of the workforce is uninformed about the very concept of net zero.
Bridging the Knowledge Gap Through Training
Investing in training is a key solution to this issue. Comprehensive training programs can help fill the knowledge gap, demonstrating an organisation’s commitment to environmental performance and highlighting the critical role that employees play in achieving these goals. With proper understanding, employees can offer valuable insights and innovative solutions within their specific areas of work.
To provide a baseline knowledge of net zero and raise awareness of its implementation within an organisation, Make UK recommend IEMA’s Introduction to Net Zero eLearning training.
Martin Elliker, Senior Learning and Development Consultant at Make UK said: Introduction to Net Zero is a powerful tool for organisations on a journey towards net zero and provides an approach to raising awareness across the business.
To support organisations rolling out training across the workforce, Make UK have developed Amplify eLearning, which brings you Make UK’s eLearning but at scale.
The eLearning format is a convenient, flexible, and cost-effective way to roll out training to the workforce. It allows employees to learn at their own pace and from any location, which is particularly beneficial for organisations with geographically dispersed teams. Additionally, Amplify eLearning facilitates easier tracking of progress and evaluation of training effectiveness.
Chris Newson, Environment, Health and Safety Director at Make UK, said: By equipping employees with a baseline understanding of net zero, its importance, and the specific targets of their organisation, businesses can transform their workforce from passive participants to active contributors in their environmental strategy.
