Starting as Dynamite Baits in the early 2000s, Rapala is one of Europe’s largest manufacturers and distributors of fishing bait. With an ambitious commitment to sustainability at the core of the company, the team at Rapala are keen to continually improve process efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint.

Having already converted facilities to LED lighting, swapped packaging for recyclable alternatives, and transitioned to using 100% biodiesel on-site, producing their own on-site green energy was the next step in Rapala’s journey to becoming carbon neutral.
Keen to work with a local, independent supplier, Rapala appointed renewable energy specialists, Geo Green Power, to install 356 solar panels on factory and office roofs at their Cotgrave Nottingham site.
Working with a local supplier
Dave Spence, Operations Manager & Sustainability Ambassador at Rapala, explained: “We wanted a local, independent supplier to do the work, not least because that helped reduce the environmental impact.”
Geo Green Power installed the 143kWp solar PV system over two weeks, while the site remained fully operational.
“We have a system designed specifically to optimise energy production at our site and the Geo Green team did a great job – they were highly professional and completed their work on time and on budget,” Spence said.

Greater energy independence
The large-scale solar system produces approximately 106,000kWh of clean electricity annually, meaning Rapala is now able to source around 25% of its energy from the sun, with the rest from other renewable sources. This has achieved a reduction in carbon emissions by over 37 tonnes already – the equivalent of taking seven cars off the road.
Spence added: “The installation of Geo Green’s solar PV system has given us more independence and control over our energy bills and is another important milestone as we continue to reduce our climate impact.”
The system has cut Rapala’s energy costs by more than £50,000 annually, with a full return on investment expected within four years.
