Unconventional Solar Boosts Sustainability for Global Tech Giant

Fluke and Geo Green Power

Fluke is an international leader in the manufacturing, distribution and servicing of electronic tools and software, with centres across the globe.

Offering a wide range of specialised tools for surveying and maintaining solar systems themselves, Fluke was keen to install solar panels at their UK location near Norwich airport.

Set on working with a flexible supplier that understood their specific project requirements, the electronics manufacturer researched a range of companies to find the right fit and appointed Geo Green Power to install a 480kWp solar PV system across two factory roofs.

A tailored solar solution

Fluke had decided to fund the installation through asset finance. According to Dominic Olley, Indirect Purchase at Fluke, Geo Green Power stood out due to their knowledge of flexible solar funding options.

“We found it very easy to work with the team at Geo Green Power,” Dominic said “They were very professional, informative, and we can’t fault them at all.”

The rise of flexible funding options, including asset finance, leasing, and power purchase agreements (PPAs), has made solar more accessible for manufacturers of all sizes by reducing the upfront cost of installation and improving cash flow.

However, it’s not just the funding that made this project unique. Due to the very close proximity of just 200 metres to Norwich airport and associated runways, the installation team had to take extra precautions and carried out a detailed Glint and Glare Assessment for the installation.

To ensure the panels didn’t cause any disruptions to aircraft, a solar glare analysis tool was utilised to model and assess solar reflectivity, taking into account a range of factors including time of the year, panel orientation, and their model.

Ultimately, the project was approved with no further mitigation recommended.

Supporting sustainability goals

Now safely up and running, the solar installation is estimated to generate 380,000kWh of energy annually, not only contributing to long-term reductions in energy costs but also saving 95 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.

These carbon savings are equivalent to taking 19 petrol cars off the road permanently, supporting Fluke’s broader sustainability goals.

Speaking about the installation, Kat Auckland, Projects & Communications Director at Geo Green Power, commented, “It’s great to have the opportunity to really work alongside a business to tailor a unique solution that’s going to help them take the next step in their sustainability journey.”

“Technological advances and increasingly flexible funding options mean more buildings and businesses are now suitable for an installation. Whether it’s an unconventional location, irregular energy demands, or limited installation space, we’re increasingly seeing specialised projects where companies are working closely with suppliers to maximise solar and get the most out of their installation,” Auckland added.
