For users of DMG Mori machining centres that are served by the machine builder’s Matris WPH pallet and workpiece handling system, or by a Robo2Go or WH Cell workpiece storage and handling system, the company has introduced a new, automatically-actuated vice on which the moveable jaw can be adjusted to suit a new size of workpiece without the need for manual intervention.
The easyFIX vice, which is available in two sizes, is mounted directly on the machining centre table if a Robo2Go or WH Cell is used, while the WPH option is designed for zero-point clamping and is equipped with a Schunk interface for fixture changeover.
At the start of a new production batch, the vice is able to clamp workpieces automatically without the need for operator involvement, even if the next component size varies by more than the 4.5 mm clamping stroke of the movable jaw. The required opening is adjusted by means of a special device exchanged automatically from the tool magazine into the spindle, which then pulls the jaw along the appropriate linear axis to its new programmed position. Alternatively, this can be done manually.
Before the jaw position is altered, a probe in the spindle determines the precise position of the vice, then rechecks the new jaw location before the robot loads the first workpiece. This is followed by pneumatic or hydraulic actuation of the vice initiated by the DMG Mori machining centre control, after which milling and drilling of the securely fixtured workpiece begins. When the cutting cycle is complete, the robot removes the machined part and loads the next workpiece.
The easyFIX 100 is pneumatically actuated and has a clamping force of 30 kN. Workpiece dimensions with standard jaws are up to 110 x 150 x 190 mm, although optional jaws are available that allow for a workpiece length of 175 instead of 150 mm. The easyFIX 210 operates either pneumatically at 10 bar or hydraulically at 80 bar. Clamping force is 45 kN or 50 kN respectively and workpieces measuring 230 x 200 x 150 mm can be accommodated.
The easyFIX’s wide adjustment range gives the vice maximum flexibility in automated manufacturing. Other configurations are also possible, such as an easyFIX pyramid that accommodates two vices and hence two workpieces, as well as a dual-station version for clamping larger components. All designs optimise chip evacuation and simplify cleaning, ensuring reliable operation.
