iPRODUCE Hackathon German Winner 2023: Philipp Lategahn Introduces "Hobbies as a Service - Audiobook Toy"

iPRODUCE is thrilled to announce Philipp Lategahn as the German winner of the prestigious iPRODUCE Hackathon 2023. Lategahn’s winning entry, “Hobbies as a Service – Audiobook Toy,” impressed the judges with its innovative concept and interactive design aimed at engaging children in reading and storytelling.

The Audiobook Toy serves as a bridge between traditional storytelling and modern technology, offering a fun and interactive way for children to develop listening skills, expand their imagination, and foster a love for books and stories. With a base and a 10-cent RFID sticker, children can bring their figurines to life and embark on captivating audio adventures.

Lategahn’s design prioritizes several key factors to enhance user experience. The ease of manufacturing ensures that even those with limited DIY experience can assemble the box easily. The laser-cut design reduces manufacturing time and shipping costs. Additionally, customers have the option to use polymer clay to create their own figurines, further promoting creativity.

Durability is another essential aspect of the Audiobook Toy. Constructed with high-quality beechwood, the box can withstand frequent handling. The magnetic USB port ensures that even excessive force will not damage the device. Moreover, the batteries are made to endure numerous power cycles, surpassing the performance of traditional toys.

Safety is of paramount importance, and the Audiobook Toy utilizes lithium-ferrum-polymer batteries known for their near-indestructible properties. While they may not possess the same capacity as conventional batteries, these batteries provide enhanced safety for children.

Another standout feature is the open-source nature of the toy’s software, released under the GPL v3 license as ESPuino. This open-source software allows for customization, enabling users to personalize the toy according to their preferences. Adding fabric or felt pieces to the toy allows for the addition of facial features or embellishments, creating a more immersive experience for children.

When asked how his entry differentiates from existing ideas in the marketplace, Lategahn highlighted the freedom of choice and customization that the Audiobook Toy offers. Parents can select designs, audio content, and interactive features that align with their child’s interests and learning needs. This unique aspect promotes a rewarding and enjoyable project that nurtures creativity, craftsmanship, and parental control over settings. Furthermore, the internal Wi-Fi connectivity enables seamless content updates and facilitates the DIY process for creating more figurines using polymer clay.

The applications of the Audiobook Toy extend beyond the realm of children’s entertainment. The toy can be instrumental in educational settings, supporting audio-based learning experiences and literacy development. It caters to individuals with visual impairments or reading difficulties by providing an accessible and user-friendly method to enjoy books without relying on printed text. Moreover, the Audiobook Toy finds utility in language learning, travel, commuting, and elderly care.

Philipp Lategahn expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the iPRODUCE Hackathon, emphasizing the platform it provides to showcase his product to a wider range of potential customers. He also extended his congratulations to the fellow finalists, highlighting the inspiring journey of creativity, collaboration, and the maker spirit that the hackathon embodied.
