IChemE Hosts Government Minister for Energy Debate

The IChemE second Energy Transition Debate.

On January 20, the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) brought industry experts and policymakers together in London for its second Energy Transition Debate. It explored the critical role of chemical engineering in delivering the UK’s industrial strategy, net-zero targets and sustainable growth ambitions. Among the contributors were IChemE President, Professor Raffaella Ocone, and UK Government Minister for Industry, Chris McDonald MP.

The debate focussed on the intersection of industrial policy, geopolitics and sustainability, highlighting how chemical engineers are uniquely positioned to support the UK’s transition to a low-carbon economy. There were over 100 attendees present, who were treated to insights from a broad cross-section of IChemE’s membership.

As an experienced chemical engineer, University of Cambridge graduate, and now Minister for Industry, Chris McDonald MP is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between chemical engineering and politics.

“IChemE members offered diverse perspectives on chemical engineering’s role in shaping the UK’s energy future in line with shared sustainability targets, underscoring the sector’s critical role in delivering practical, scalable solutions to global challenges,” commented Professor Ocone.

“The Energy Transition Debate forms part of IChemE’s ongoing commitment to foster dialogue with industry members and policymakers on critical issues affecting the profession and society. We look forward to continuing the conversation and supporting its members to engage with the challenges and opportunities of the energy transition.”
