New Chair Takes Charge at Defence and Security Cluster

Barnbrook new defence and security group chair

New defence and security group chair Andrew Barnett has vowed to unleash the potential of the South Central region.

Andrew, who is managing director of Fareham-based electronics engineering business Barnbrook Systems, made the pledge after being elected to lead the South Central Regional Defence and Security Cluster (SCRDSC).

SCRDSC brings together industry leaders across Hampshire, Surrey, the Isle of Wight and West Sussex to grow the sector in support of the UK’s evolving defence and security needs.

Andrew, who has more than 45 years of industry experience, is a passionate champion of SMEs, innovation and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

He said: “I am honoured to be appointed SCRDSC chair.

“The South Central region has extraordinary untapped potential. It can, and should, play a far greater role in meeting the UK’s strategic defence and security needs.

“ As chair, I want to unlock that potential –  boosting regional growth, strengthening local communities and building lasting capability.

“True progress comes from partnership. Within the SME community and across the defence and security sector, success depends on open dialogue, mutual trust and a collective commitment to deliver.

“I’m committed to driving the cluster’s vision forward — creating something enduring, financially robust and truly sustainable for the benefit of us all.”

Andrew has worked at the sharp end of technology, strategy and business growth — from starting out at a Hampshire-based defence firm to becoming senior executive leading Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) technology operations for a global blue-chip, and now running multi-award-winning Barnbrook.

Supported by Hampshire County Council, SCRDSC facilitates collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, armed forces, businesses, charities, academia and government agencies.

This includes sharing ideas and identifying routes to market, using cutting-edge technology and world-class research to tackle complex modern defence and security challenges.

It also offers business support, training and development, information about funding and tenders, networking with a diverse supply chain and opportunities to engage with armed forces, universities  and fellow businesses.

Teresa Hogsbjerg, strategic economy lead – economy and skills at Hampshire Council, said: “Congratulations to Andrew on his appointment as SCRDSC chair.

“We look forward to his leadership as we continue to grow a sustainable, collaborative and impactful cluster that delivers for our members and the wider UK defence and security ecosystem.

“The SCRDSC will help amplify the region’s reputation in defence and security, supporting the sector’s continued expansion and helping attract further investment and talent.

“By working together, we can ensure our communities and businesses play a vital role in shaping the future of national security.”

One year after its launch, the SCRDSC has 500 members.
