As you may well know, leading global construction company Balfour Beattyâs work on the £63 million flood alleviation scheme in Lancashire is now well underway. The Rossall and Anchorsholme sea defence project will protect thousands of properties at risk of flooding across a 2.9km coastline, and the current work will see the creation of an ecology park on a 1.5km strip of land to be known as Larkholme Grasslands.
A new sea wall has already been constructed using 280,000 tonnes of rock and 2,762 precast concrete units during the first four-year phase of the scheme, and now Balfour Beatty is making significant strides towards the finish line with this current work on the former Biological Heritage Site. The developments will now allow the local residents to enjoy the rich and diverse wildlife that can be found in the area!
Mark Farrah, the North & Midlands Regional Business Director at Balfour Beatty, has commented, This work marks the beginning of the end of construction for the Rossall sea defences. Once complete, together with the Anchorsholme coastal project, it will be the largest coastal protection scheme in the UK helping to protect 12,500 residents from the risk of flooding across a coastline that spans over 2.9 kilometres.
The focus of the first stage of works will be on earthworks to raise the level of the ground, which will shortly be followed by the turfing, seeding and re-planting of rarer plant species. The whole project is scheduled for completion in the winter of this year, but additional landscaping works at Rossall is only set for completion in summer 2018.
