£400M Container Terminal Open for Business in Liverpool

After three years of construction work in Liverpool from one of the UK’s biggest port operators Peel Ports led to last Friday’s grand opening of the new £400 million container terminal in Liverpool called Liverpool2, in a project that has expanded what was already the UK’s largest transatlantic port, creating one of the most advanced container terminals in Europe in the process.

This state-of-the-art deep water container terminal is situated at the Port of Liverpool, and it will have the ability to deal with largest cargo vessels in the world, and along with the Royal Seaforth Container Terminal will have the capacity to handle around one million containers per year.

Today marks the beginning of a new era for the Port of Liverpool said Peel Ports CEO Mark Whitworth. Our investment will help global shippers to transport cargo more efficiently to their destination with lower costs, congestion and carbon emissions. Liverpool is in the right location, providing state-of-the-art facilities and technologies, and offers a real competitive advantage with a shorter supply chain and providing an all-water route right to the heart of the UK via the Manchester Ship Canal.

Liverpool2 was opened in style with both customers and stakeholders turning out in force for the opening event which included a musical performance from Alison Moyet as well as a pyrotechnic display to celebrate what is expected to bring around 5,000 jobs in the North West and help to stabilise the UK economy.

Being able to compete on the scale offered by Liverpool2 is only one aspect of how we’re transforming the port Mark Whitworth added. Our real driving force is a commitment to customers, whether shipping lines or cargo owners, and helping them to achieve their business vision.

So it looks like the three years of hard work were certainly worth it, in what looks like a ground-breaking project by Peel Ports.
