Ogle Steps in to Help Students Drive for F1 World Finals Glory : A Hertfordshire modelmaking company has helped a driven team of students set the wheels in motion in an exciting engineering challenge.
Ogle Models and Prototypes, based in Letchworth, supported the teenagers in their bid for world glory in the finals of the F1 in Schools multi-disciplinary competition in Singapore.
The competition brought together young STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) talents from around the globe as the students were tasked with designing and manufacturing miniature air-powered F1 cars before racing them along a 20-metre course.
Specialists from Ogle created the 3D-printed wheels using the selective laser sintering process to put the pupils on track for success. Several sets were created for testing and the contest itself.
Philip Martin, director at Ogle, said: “We were thrilled to support this talented team with their exciting competition entry.
“At Ogle, we believe in helping the next generation of engineers and innovators and sponsoring the students aligns perfectly with this value.”
The four pupils from James Gillespie’s High School in Edinburgh, who call themselves Honeycomb Racing, needed to raise £15,000 to cover the cost of their entry, including travel and manufacturing the car and pit display and appealed for help through sponsorship.
Student Alaric Bromiley, PR and sponsorship manager for the Honeycomb Racing team, said: “Ogle’s unique manufacturing capabilities allowed us to maximise our car’s potential at this year’s F1 in Schools World Finals, aiding us in, once again, creating an aerodynamic and efficient car.”
The Honeycomb Racing students, who are in their final year at school, were crowned Scottish national champions and placed second in the UK national finals in January. They also won the top prize in the Fastest Car and Best Verbal Presentation categories.
The competitors joined around 60 other teams at the finals last week, with the challenge staged alongside the Singapore Grand Prix.
Honeycomb Racing picked up two accolades at the event, the Sponsorship and Marketing and Enterprise Portfolio awards.
