The Hyundai Motor company has backed alternative fuels by mapping out its plans for luxury electric cars.
The car giant is set to expand its eco-friendly vehicle range, including the development of luxury electric cars in a bid to exploit the increasing distrust of diesel vehicles from customers around the world.
Hyundai’s Head of Genesis (the manufacturers luxury car brand), Manfred Fitzgerald, says that the South Korean car maker is set to include Genesis cars in its new electric car line up as it moves towards the more profitable premium segment.
Mr Fitzgerald said that the company will be placing greater emphasis on alternative propulsion systems in the future as it crafts and shapes a new luxury electric car brand.
He added that in the future luxury cars too will need to use alternative methods of propulsion and that the future of the company lies in EV.
It has been said that Hyundai has been lagging behind its world rivals with regard to electric car technology, but has now begun to reverse that trend.
The Ioniq sedan, the company’s latest electric car model, boasts the best fuel economy in the world among hybrid models.
Previously a Lamborghini brand director, Mr Fitzgerald took control of the Genesis line up earlier in the year.
He did not provide details of whether the new series of electric cars would be battery-powered, hydrogen fuel cells or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
Hyundai says that eco-friendly fuel systems are not only important for the mainstream market, but also for luxury vehicles, while rival Western firms Audi, Mercedes Benz and BMW all provide plug-in hybrid models of their cars already.
Genesis was launched by the South Korean car giant last year in a bid to arrest decreasing profits in its big markets.
In the next four years the firm plans to complete a full line up of luxury electric car models.
