Formula One is often described as the ‘fastest R&D lab on Earth’. It is a sport defined by precision, where marginal gains compound into competitive advantage and where the ability to process, interpret and act on data faster than your rivals can determine success or failure. Today, AI represents the next frontier in that pursuit – and, according to Fabrizio Pilotti, Chief Information Officer at Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team, its growing ecosystem of tech and AI partnerships marks an important step towards realising its full potential. 

AI, for the Silverstone-based team, is not seen as a single tool, but as a transformative capability that spans across the entire organisation. By integrating secure, enterprise-grade generative AI into its workflows, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team is working to create an environment in which knowledge becomes more accessible and decisions more informed, for innovation to accelerate at scale, on- and off-track. 

“One of the immediate opportunities lies in how we interact with data. A modern Formula One car comprises over 13,000 components, with new parts being designed on average every 15 minutes. Engineers are evaluating vast numbers of variables – from aerodynamic performance to environmental conditions – under extreme time pressure. AI systems can help us cut through that complexity, surfacing insights that would otherwise take days to uncover, so we can focus on the most impactful decisions,” Pilotti comments.

AI partnerships with companies like Arm and Cognition support the team with faster decision-making under pressure. Arm underpins AI analysis through energy-efficient computing, delivering greater performance per watt and enabling faster decision cycles, particularly in high-stakes situations such as pit stops, where real-time data analysis is critical.

Through its partnership with Cognition, the team aims to implement AI agents to work alongside engineers as part of the wider team. As Pilotti adds: “AI agents could become an extension of the team. They can break down complex problems and provide solutions, learning on the job while sharing progress updates. We plan to use them to support and accelerate model development, while also helping our people learn and adapt to change – playing an important role in expanding the capabilities of our workforce.”

The partnerships’ emphasis on security is also significant in the world of Formula One – and indeed, many industries beyond motorsport – as data fast becomes one of the most valuable assets. Ensuring that AI systems can operate within a secure, controlled environment, while still delivering high performance is vital. By pushing AI to perform under the extreme conditions of Formula One, the sport is effectively ‘stress-testing’ technologies that can be applied to other industries. 

Looking ahead, then, there is a new kind of race on the horizon – one that takes place not only on the circuit, but within data centres, software platforms and AI models, as teams look to integrate these technologies into their operations, turning data into decisive action faster than ever before.
