It is understood that Laing O’Rourke has been chosen as the winner of the £1 billion Manchester Airport redevelopment ahead of a Chinese-led consortium made up of Willmott Dixon, John Sisk & Son and BCEGI.
The works package is worth around £700 million and will include the expansion of terminal two at Manchester Airport.
Among the iconic jobs carried out by Laing OâRourke in Manchester are the expansion of the Etihad Stadium and the transformation of the Manchesterâs Town Hall Complex.
The firmâs biggest jobs in airports include the expansion of Heathrowâs terminal five from 2001-2008. Part of this work was terminal fiveâs main infrastructure, which included site logistics and enabling across 147 sub-projects and 16 major projects.
The expansion of the airportâs second terminal will also include the construction of relating infrastructure including access facilities, car parks and piers.
Among the other contractors to register an interest in the T2 job were Vinci, Kier and Balfour Beatty, but they were dismissed from the race which left just Laing OâRourke and the Chinese-led consortium to go directly up against each other.
BCEGI has already started work on the multi million pound Airport City Manchester mixed use project which is part of the Chinese contractorâs strategy of further expansion in the UK after it established its European headquarters at the site.
The company was also chosen as the primary contractor on Scarborough Group Internationalâs £700 million development in Greater Manchesterâs Middlewood Locks.
Laing OâRourke carried out a strategic review of its business activities earlier in the year to determine its business strategy over the next five year period and the Manchester Airport contract marks a major triumph for the company and a much needed boost.
The contractor has made some changes since the review including a new leadership team which will sit under three new operating arms within its European business.
