Navigating UK Energy Workforce Readiness & Skills Gaps

As the UK energy sector navigates the future of the North Sea while accelerating investment in offshore wind, power and wider critical energy infrastructure, one challenge is emerging across every part of the industry – workforce readiness.

While much of the discussion around the energy transition focuses on technology, policy and investment, the ability to deliver future projects will ultimately depend on whether organisations have the required skills and capability to support them.

At the same time, demand for refresher and recertification training remains strong. Rather than signalling workforce expansion, this indicates a continued focus on strengthening current teams’ capability and expertise. 

This evolving landscape is also exposing the limitations of traditional training models. Historically, training has been driven by compliance, delivered in specific formats and measured by certification outcomes. While compliance remains essential, organisations increasingly require more flexible approaches that reflect operational realities and individual learning needs.

Blended learning is emerging as the preferred model, combining digital learning, simulation and practical training to improve engagement, reduce operational down time and accelerate competence. Advances in simulation technologies and digital twins are creating more realistic than ever learning environments, while early applications of AI are helping to improve visibility of workforce skills gaps.

The next stage of evolution is the cross-integration of training, competence and workforce planning. By linking workforce data with operational requirements, organisations can move from reactive training delivery to proactive capability management. This enables earlier identification of skills gaps, supports cross-sector mobility and aligns workforce development with long-term business goals.

As the energy sector continues to expand and thrive, workforce development can no longer be viewed as a standalone element. The organisations best positioned for the future will be those that treat workforce readiness as a strategic priority with a managed element embedded within their operations, enabling them to respond confidently to both today’s demands and tomorrow’s opportunities.
