Kawneer Has Been Used For the Curtain Walling, Windows and Doors At the Royal Mint Centre

The UK manufacturing company Kawneer has been used for the curtain walling, windows and doors on the new visitor centre at The Royal Mint. It has been announced that the Architectural aluminum glazing systems have been used of a cutting edge development for The Royal Mint.

A variety of different Kawneer products have been used on this project. This includes the AA®100 zone curtain walling, AA®540 top-hung casement window vents and series 190 commercial and heavy duty doors that have been used externally and internally within The Royal Mint Experience. The window vents have been specially made by the approved specialist sub-contractor AB Glass. The window vents have been manufactured in order to match the cladding panels that were made out of oxidized stainless steel.

The building has managed to achieve a BREEAM rating of Very good. The project was designed by Rio Architects and has tessellated hexagons on the façade of the building to look like the shape of coins. The £9 million build has taken a year to be constructed by ISG, the main contractor on the development.

The building consists of a steel frame and concrete floor, and includes precast concrete plinths and insulated with metal cladding for the roof and walls. The development has a visitor foyer, an exhibition hall, café and kitchen facilities, education facilities, staff offices and ancillary spaces. The new centre will allow visitors access to the factory and take a tour to see the coins being produced.

The development has taken place at the Royal Mint site in Llantrisant, South Wales. The designers took inspiration from the minting process, as well as working alongside The Royal Mint to create a building that reflects the quality materials used and craftsmanship required when making coins. Kawneer’s systems have allowed the building to let light in as well as providing access to natural ventilation. Kawneer’s products are built for longevity, which means that The Royal Mint Experience will be a creative and quality built site for many years to come.
