Worldwide Recognition for Manchester Apartment Block

The Tribe apartment blocks in Manchester have achieved worldwide recognition following success at the 2017 BREEAM Awards, as Tribe managed to beat off some strong competition to be named as this year’s Best Residential Scheme.

Originally built in the 1950s, Tribe consists of three tower blocks in the shape of Tribe New Islington, Tribe Ancoats and Tribe East Quarter in Ancoats. All three have been renovated as part of a £17 million scheme created through partnerships between Manchester City Council, Homes & Communities Agency, Ancoats Residential Holdings and Rowlinson Construction.

The scheme managed to create 192 private rented sector homes in Manchester, and various different sustainability measures were implemented during the refurbishment which will lead to a saving of approximately 28,000 tonnes of carbon throughout its lifetime.

Andrew Smith, the Project Lead and Technical Director at Pozzoni, has commented, We are delighted that the Tribe scheme has been recognised on an international level at the BREEAM Awards. Achieving a sustainable development was always one of our top priorities for this project and a substantial amount of work went into the refurbishment, so it’s fantastic to receive this prestigious accolade.

The BREEAM Awards are in place to recognise the world’s most sustainable buildings, and Tribe managed to beat off competition from over 70 countries for the top prize, including entries from Spain, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, China and the UK. The judges’ statement concluded that there was a clear and strong commitment to sustainability from the client and project team, and the way that the refurbishment has made the most of the existing materials and structure as well as creating opportunities for enhancement was great to see.

It is huge both for the city and the UK as a whole to achieve this global success at the BREEAM Awards, and we can hope for further success in the coming years!
