Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield could be set for a major expansion after plans were submitted by London based property investment company British Land to extend the shopping centre by 300,000 sq ft. costing around £300 million.
Meadowhall is one of Sheffieldâs most popular visitor attractions and it regularly brings in thousands of keen shoppers on a daily basis, not just in South Yorkshire but from various other regions of the country, and if these extension proposals are accepted it will only go on to become an even bigger shopping attraction.
The proposals are part of a five-year plan which will see the leisure facilities at Meadowhall being improved significantly, with a brand new gym, an open air terrace and more dining facilities included. There is also expected to be a brand new cinema with a solar-panelled roof that will contribute 10 per cent of the Meadowhall extensionâs energy.
The shopping centre is currently undergoing a major refurbishment project that is being carried out by Laing OâRourke and it is reportedly costing around £60 million, which is on top of the £24 million that has been invested into store designs and other refurbishments over the last two years by existing brands there.
British Land, who own the shopping centre as part of a joint venture with Norwegian central bank Norges, will be hearing the final planning decision from Sheffield City Council in Spring 2017, and only then we will know whether or not the Meadowhall extension will be going ahead.
In the meantime, the company will be working on finishing off its redevelopment work on Broadgate Campus, for which Sir Robert McAlpine has already been selected for as the single construction partner. Whether the Meadowhall extension will follow this project we shall have to wait and see.
