Manchester University Engineering Campus Development Underway

Balfour Beatty has announced that they have signed a £287 million contract with the University of Manchester. The construction company will be working with the University in order to deliver the new Manchester Engineering Campus Development. This contract is thought to be one of the largest capital developments to ever be undertaken by a UK university.

The creation of this new Engineering facility is predicted to take four years and is a part of the University of Manchester’s 10-year campus master plan. The project will provide new premises for its engineering schools which include teaching spaces and research institutes such as the Dalton Nuclear Institute and the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials.

This new facility will consolidate the majority of the university’s estate in order to create one main campus and free up land on the north side of the campus. Balfour Beatty will be working to make the most of off-site manufacturing processes as well as the latest BIM technology to optimise construction efficiency. Even with the utilisation of off-site production, there will still be as many as 1,000 construction workers on the site.

The University announced that they would be investing in the Manchester Engineering Campus Development in order to transform the way that they educate the next generation of engineers. The construction of the new engineering facility will take four years and is a part of a larger ten year masterplan that will create a world-class estate that benefits staff students and visitors.

Balfour Beatty has extensive experience working in the higher education sector having delivered a range of schemes such as the Holyrood postgraduate village for the University of Edinburgh and the Diamond building for the Engineering faculty for the University of Sheffield. The new Engineering Campus will be the home of the university’s engineering school and deliver innovative teaching spaces and research institutes such as the Dalton Nuclear Institute.
