A recent study has reported that Engineering is the 4th most trusted profession in the United Kingdom. Which is exciting news for engineers up and down the country.
People working in the sector have been seen as trustworthy by a whopping 87% of the population, sitting just behind Doctors, Nurses and Teachers.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution, have released the results after its latest study with the Ipsos MORI Veracity Index. The two companies have been tracking the latest movements in Brit’s trust in key professions since the 1980’s. This is the very first time Engineering has made an appearance.
Featuring engineering in the survey has proved to be of wonderful benefit to both the study, and the reputation of the sector. Using a scale of 1,001 people, the results have highlighted that nearly 9 in 10 of the British population has faith in its engineers.
Trust in engineers was especially high amongst recent graduates, with 91% showing support for the profession. A figure that has been regarded as highly important for the future of the industry, as there is an increasing need to further the number of qualified engineers.
Having engineers standing in similar trusted heights to Doctors, Nurses and Teachers, could lead to a shift in perception of engineering as a career path, and aid to encourage a future generation to take charge of the sector.
Engineers fared notably better in the results than Estate Agents, who were trusted by 19% of the people who took part in the study, and better than Politicians, who were trusted by 30%. Journalists were only trusted by 26% and Government Ministers by 22%.
