Bus Drivers and Engineers, at Stagecoach Yorkshire’s Barnsley depot, have taken advantage of free blood pressure checks and heart-health advice, which are hoped to detect any problems and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
Stagecoach has worked with the award-winning ‘How’s Thi Ticker’ team, who were able to take measurements and have important conversations with colleagues about looking after their health. How’s Thi Ticker won a Local Government Chronicle Public Health Award, in 2024, for their work.
Matt Kitchin, Managing Director of Stagecoach Yorkshire, said: “At Stagecoach, we firmly believe that we are stronger together – we support each other and understand that it is important to always do the right thing, so it has been a wonderful opportunity to work with the How’s Thi Ticker team.
“We know how important the health and wellbeing of our colleagues is, and I believe that these checks flagged medical issues for a couple of people, that they can now get help with, so it makes this project very worthwhile.
“In fact, I am pleased to say that the team are due to be returning very soon, for any colleagues who were not able to make the session this time.”
For most people, high blood pressure will not come with any symptoms. However, if it is not diagnosed and treated, it can lead to serious health problems.
If you are concerned about your blood pressure, you can pop into your local pharmacy or visit your GP. There are lots of simple things you can do to bring your numbers down, including cutting down on alcohol, stopping smoking, being more active, and eating a diet that is low in salt.
