NEBOSH Graduates Earn £4,892 a Year More

According to new research, 60% of health and safety job descriptions require a NEBOSH qualification, with graduates earning £4,892 per year more than their colleagues.

The study, conducted by RRC International, which analysed 850 job adverts, also found that nearly 17% of these safety roles state an IOSH qualification as a must-have, resulting in a 9% increase in annual salary when compared to the salary of those with no qualifications.

Richard Stockley, Managing Director at RRC International, comments: “Our research shows the importance UK employers place on health and safety qualifications. With three in five health and safety job ads currently requiring a NEBOSH accreditation, it is clear to see what applicants need to have to be in with a shot of getting a role. As well as tipping the scale in an applicant’s favour, quality health and safety qualifications also result in a much higher salary – nearly £5,000 more per year than those without them. It’s a win/win for the employer and the employee.”

Further to this, 22% of all health and safety job descriptions specify the need for a health and safety diploma or equivalent qualification. The time spent studying is well compensated, with diploma-holders earning salaries that are 20% higher. This results in an average salary of £47,839, £8,000 more per year than those without.

Additionally, those with IOSH memberships could expect an even higher salary than those with IOSH qualifications, with the average being £51,091 compared to just £43,105.

Despite these findings, the research highlighted that 19% of health and safety job descriptions don’t require qualifications at all. This allows for learning on the job and offers opportunities to those without training and expertise.

Richard Stockley continues: “With times getting harder and the job market more competitive than ever, it’s vital for people to ensure they are best placed to achieve success and stand out from the crowd.

“RRC International’s latest research shows that the best way to get ahead of the competition in the health and safety sector is through training and education. Qualifications deliver a comprehensive look at the world of health and safety, prepping graduates for real world experiences and situations, and saving many lives in the process.”
