The goodShed Cardiff, part of Men’s Sheds Cymru, has officially opened its new shipping container base at Railway Gardens, marking a significant milestone for the group.
The new space was made possible by a £5,000 donation from Econ Engineering, enabling The goodShed to establish a permanent base for its activities for the first time.
After two years of operating without a dedicated premises, the new facility will provide a stable environment for members to collaborate on projects, share skills, and build social connections. The initiative aims to support mental and physical wellbeing by offering a welcoming and inclusive space for the community.
Richard Melhuish, Secretary at The goodShed, said: “From the time that we started the goodShed group, we have struggled with the lack of our own work and social space. Often during the colder months we have gathered in a cold, draughty wooden shelter.
“We had planned to apply for grant funding in order for us to rent a cabin at Railway Gardens. Out of the blue we received a very generous offer of a donation from Econ which will enable us to rent our own space.
“This is an exciting step forward for our group and the local community. A massive thank you to Econ staff and the company for choosing to support the Men’s Shed movement and The goodShed in particular.”
Colin Trewhitt, Factory Manager at Econ Engineering, said: “Econ Engineering is proud to support Men’s Sheds across the UK, and we are pleased to see The goodShed Cardiff now benefiting from a dedicated space. These community-led initiatives play a vital role in promoting wellbeing and social interaction, and we are delighted that our contribution has helped to create a lasting resource for members.”
Econ Engineering, the UK’s leading manufacturer of winter and highway maintenance vehicles, has been supporting Men’s Sheds initiatives as part of its commitment to community engagement. The company continues to invest in projects that have a positive impact on local communities, helping to foster connections and skill-sharing opportunities.
The opening of the new space marks an exciting new chapter for The goodShed Cardiff, ensuring that its members have a secure and welcoming environment to continue their work for years to come.
