In a post on his social network, he likened the system to the computer from the Iron Man film series, Jarvis, which is capable of speaking to the user and automating processes in the home.

Zuckerberg said that the project would become his personal challenge for the next year and he plans to code it himself.

I’m going to start by exploring what technology is already out there, he said in the Facebook post.

Then I’ll start teaching it to understand my voice to control everything in our home — music, lights, temperature and so on.

I’ll teach it to let friends in by looking at their faces when they ring the doorbell. I’ll teach it to let me know if anything is going on in Max’s [Zuckerberg’s daughter] room that I need to check on when I’m not with her.

On the work side, it’ll help me visualise data in VR to help me build better services and lead my organisations more effectively.

He said it would be a ‘fun intellectual challenge’ for himself and that he would share the results of his findings over the course of the next year.

Responding to a post from a Facebook user, Zuckerberg also called for greater encouragement in schools for girls to get involved in science and technology.

Last month, the Facebook founder announced he would give away 99 per cent of his Facebook shares over the course of his lifetime to fund a new charity promoting green causes.
