PassivSystems has released news of a project valued to be £10.8 million Smart Energy Islands project which is partly funded by the European Union. The intention of the project is to help lower energy bills and fuel poverty. The Smart Energy Islands will focus first on the Isles of Scilly.
PassivSystems is designed as a forecasting programme for energy demand and will be able to control energy heating, storage and generation. This system will be installed in homes and businesses on the islands this year. PassivSystems is part of a Hitachi Europe led plan that, working with leading battery company Moixa Technology, should see a reduction in the islandâs fossil fuel use.
The Smart Energy Islands initiative will be partly financed from £8.6 million given to the European Regional Development Fund. With the intention of reducing the islandâs reliability on fossil fuels in order to increase the usage of renewable technologies. It is hoped that the increase of renewable technologies being used on the islands will also improve the number of low-carbon vehicles used on the island.
The Isles of Scilly are part of the UK, located off the coast of Cornwall, and currently hopes that the new Smart Energy Initiative will see a reduction in energy bills by 20% by 2020, with a further reduction of 40% by 2025. It is also believed that the initiative will make 40% of the islesâ energy demand will be met by renewable sources by 2025. In order to get more low carbon vehicles on the road, the target is to see 40% of vehicles on the islands using low carbon vehicles by 2025. The Smart Energy Initiative will aim to deliver a full programme of energy efficiency measures by 2020.
In order to produce the next generation of innovations and allow opportunities of the young people on the islands, there will also be a drive for internships and cultural exchange and delivery of STEM subjects for young people. This means that the Island is investing in the future of their inhabitants as well as in sustainability.
