Transaid, the international development organisation, has launched its biggest cycle challenge to mark its 20th anniversary. It invites riders from across the industry to saddle up and be part of a 972-mile journey that will start at Landâs End in Cornwall and end at John oâ Groats in Scotland.
The celebrations for the 20th anniversary will begin in September 2018 and continue into 2019, with the 12-day adventure commencing on the 11th of June 2019. It will become Transaidâs longest cycle challenge to date.
Our cycle challenges have been taking place since 2006 and continue to grow in popularity each time. The plan was always to do something special to mark our 20th anniversary, and we hope holding the event here in the UK will mean as many supporters as possible can saddle up and join us for what is going to be something really special, said Florence Bearman, Head of Fundraising at Transaid.
Over the last 12 years it organised 13 cycle events, in which more than 380 riders had taken part. It spanned more than 13 countries and it raised an incredible £1.3 million to date. The new event aims to raise £200,000 that will go towards Transaidâs campaign in sub-Saharan Africa, where they focus on improving commercial driving standards and ensuring improved access to healthcare.
Landâs End to John OâGroats by pedal power alone is not for the faint-hearted, but it will be an amazing experience; Iâve already signed up myself! Weâve got the potential to accommodate as many as 200 riders to mark this special anniversary; very different to the 12 volunteers who took on our first 460 km cycle challenge in Malawi 12 years ago, added Florence.
Those interested in the charity event can sign up alone or in groups of four friends. Individuals that sign up for the whole length of the challenge must pay a £250 registration fee and raise a minimum sponsorship target of £2,750. The teams of four will pay a group registration fee of £400 and must raise at least £4,000 collectively.
