SESAR Development Manager and SESAR Joint Undertaking have both been given a mandate by the European Commission to review the progress that has been made so far with the modernisation of the European air traffic management systems. This review has been asked for as the management systems need to be ready for the next wave of technology is introduced to the sector.

On the 9th of June it was agreed by the European Commission that the current status of the Pilot Common Project needed to be reviewed. The Common project is the European regulation that focuses on the synchronised deployment of SESAR Solutions. This deployment takes place in line with the SESAR Deployment Programme.

The European Commission have also recently mandated the exploration of a possible second Common Project. This mandate was to be carried out by SESAR Joint Undertaking. Both of the works that have been handed down by the European Commission will be carried out by the two SESAR departments. Both of these organisations will be working closely in order to carry out the work that has been asked of them. The results of the work from the mandate are expected to be delivered to the European Commission by the end of this year.

This synchronised SESAR work was started initially in 2014 as the publication of the Pilot Common Project regulation and the creation of the SESAR Development Manager, who is expected to carry out both mandated to a high standard. The creation of a second Common Project will be beneficial for the improvements of operational ATMs.

Last year the SESAR Joint Undertaking offered over 60 different SESAR Solutions. A number of these solutions are already progressing towards local and Europe wide implementation through the use of the Pilot Common Project. The Common Project is an approach that has been adopted in order to enable the successful rollout of SESAR. The project will make sure that the solutions that have been laid out in the Master Planar completed in an efficient and coordinated operation.
