The next Introduction to Engineering Construction (ITEC) course is due to start in September 2018 and more than 150 young people has the opportunity to sign up and be part of it. The Engineering Construction Industry Training board (ECITB) said that places were available at 12 sites.

“This is an excellent opportunity for those students who are currently studying or in the process of applying for an engineering qualification and are looking for an opportunity to secure an apprenticeship or full-time employment in engineering,” said ECITB head of apprenticeships, Martin Eatough. “The ITEC programme will allow them to achieve all of the year one components of a formal apprenticeship and, on completion of the programme, make them very attractive to potential employers.”

Set up in 2015, the ITEC course is the equivalent of the first year of a level 3 apprenticeship and it has provided a pool of recruits for industry each year. The course provides 10 months of training, a recognised industry-level qualification, real-world experience and training in a variety of disciplines including welding and fabrication, electrical and mechanical installation, designed, draughting and project control.

Places are currently available in colleges in Cumbria, Teesside, Somerset, East Anglia, Merseyside, Lincolnshire and North Yorks. In June, the 154 learners that enrolled on the course last year will graduate and will be looking for opportunities to apply their newly-acquired skills in the industry.

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) accountable to the Department for Education (DfE). Established in 1991, the ECITB is the skills, standards and qualifications body with statutory responsibility for the development of the engineering construction workforce of Great Britain through an industrial training levy.
