Local Politician Visits CUMMINS Huddersfield to See Recent Investments and hear about Net-Zero Ambitions

The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, MP For Huddersfield, Barry Sheerman and Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Huddersfield, Harpreet Uppal, visited the Cummins site in Huddersfield on Friday to learn more about how Cummins, a global power technology leader, is working to support the region’s net zero ambitions, and see the development, and refurbishment, of turbochargers.

More than £20 million has recently been invested in the site. Politicians were given a tour of the newly refurbished Turbocharger Plant, Research and Development Centre, renovated offices, and newly installed electric vehicle charging points. These areas of the site were all developed to help reduce the carbon footprint of the facility, and ensure it remains a contemporary working space for more than 1,000 employees that work there.

While at the site, politicians learned about Cummins’ plans to provide £800,000 funding to build solar panels across the Huddersfield site. They also saw the turbocharger manufacturing process first-hand.

The Cummins site in Huddersfield has been in operation for more than 70 years and is one of the largest employers in Huddersfield. The site designs, develops, produces and refurbishes turbochargers, which are used across the world in vehicles and machinery like buses, trucks and construction equipment.

Cummins is working to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations and products worldwide. As part of this, Cummins is investing in the development of alternative air handling solutions for zero carbon powertrains such as hydrogen. The Huddersfield site plays an integral role in helping the business to achieve these environmental objectives, with close to 200 engineers at the site helping to shape the business’ net zero strategy.

Our region has a strong and proud manufacturing history, and it’s vital we harness these strengths to create skilled, well-paid jobs as part of a greener, more sustainable future. We’re dedicated to working with partners like Cummins, across the public and the private sector, to build a Net Zero West Yorkshire by 2038.”

Barry Sheerman, MP For Huddersfield, said: “I was delighted to meet some of Cummins’ apprentices in Parliament recently. It’s always a pleasure to visit Cummins and be reminded of their innovation and scale. People think of Huddersfield as a university town, or perhaps traditionally a textile town, but the truth is that we’re a manufacturing and engineering town. It’s great to see Cummins maintaining and building on that history and investing in our town and our young people.”

Harpreet Uppal, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Huddersfield, said: “It was fantastic to see the newly upgraded Cummins site and meet some of the brilliant people that work there and are putting Huddersfield on the map as a thriving hub for innovation and manufacturing.”

Cummins is an international company that manufactures, designs, services, and distributes engines, power generation products and filtration products. Its products are used in equipment and vehicles worldwide. It employs 73,600 worldwide and generated $28.1 billion in revenue last year. The Huddersfield site is one of its many plants across the UK.
