The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and Build UK have come together a launch a week of exclusive events at some of Scarborough’s the most ambitious architectural and engineering feats. The project, named Open Doors, will provide the public access to a number of construction projects ‘ ongoing and complete’ in the hope of inspiring people to take interest in the industry and perhaps follow a career path in some aspect of construction. Sites will be open to visitors of all ages and skills levels from Monday 13^th June to Saturday 18^th June. Open Doors is expected to attract new school-leavers and children as well as recent graduates and will be therefore looking to both cement interest within trades such as architecture, brick-laying, groundswork and sales as well as generate strong employment leads for local and national businesses. Participating sites include: the Scarborough Campus of Coventry University, Scarborough Leisure Village and Scarborough University Technical College (UTC). Indeed, leading contractor and property expert, Willmott Dixon, is opening three of its sites to the public as part of the Open Doors event. in Scarborough. At their arrival on site, visitors will enjoy interesting and engaging talks on just what it takes to construct a piece of the future, gaining an insight into everything from innovative design to the planning process and, of course, key structural and interior works. From there, visitors will be signposted to the website, Go Construct, a market leading platform for finding construction industry careers. Suzannah Nichol, Chief Executive of Build UK Chief Executive described the industry as being in a war for talent up against rival sectors of retail, business and education. She added that the Open Doors event represents the ability for interesting parties to see first-hand just what goes on within the sector. Doubtless, it will go some way to revitalising the sector’s identity which is routinely associated with getting your hands dirty despite offering a number of opportunities behind the scenes. Lorraine Gregory, Partnerships Manager at CITB reiterated that construction industry is one that continues to grow and thus it will always be key sector for those seeking career development. She suggested that more than 230,000 new jobs will be available in the UK’s industry by 2020 and the Open Doors is the perfect opportunity to sample the variety on roles on offer.
