Morgan IAT Co-Founders Awarded MBEs in Queen’s New Year’s Honours

Morgan IAT co-founders Sue Clarke (Chairman) & Howard Clarke (Research Director) have both been awarded a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s 2022 New Year’s Honours list. Most outstanding is that both Sue & Howard have been included on the same Honours list as a couple, a rare accolade.

Sue has been awarded her MBE for her outstanding services to business & engineering. Howard has received his honour for his outstanding services to business & entrepreneurship.

Sue co-founded Morgan IAT with Howard back in 1987 and served as Managing Director until February 2018, continuing today as the company’s Chairman. As Managing Director, Sue was responsible for the development of Morgan IAT to its award-winning status, previously winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade) not only once, but twice in 2011 & 2016.

As a woman in the under-represented field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), Sue has tackled historical discrimination by ensuring Morgan IAT has a gender-equal engineering workforce. Currently, 36% of the company’s engineers, graduates, apprentices & technicians are female, well above the industry average at 19%. Sue is also a passionate advocate of a healthy work-life balance, being an early adopter of the flexible working programmes that have benefitted Morgan IAT employees since the 1990s.

A common issue within UK innovation is that inventors often lack fundamental support and funding, resulting in the selling of potentially pioneering ideas to offshore companies. To remedy this, Sue has been instrumental in supporting & guiding other inventors to become entrepreneurs and creating new jobs for her local & regional community. In addition to this, she has worked with universities, medical schools, individuals & start-up companies to facilitate & encourage innovation throughout her career.

Howard, on the other side, is not only an inventor & entrepreneur; he is also a passionate advocate of the next generation of innovators. Howard provides mentorship & financial support to individuals & fledgling businesses; 20% of Morgan’s annual turnover is invested in development within innovative products that positively impact society.

Since the 1980s, Howard has gained pioneering status within the medical technology space, being the originator of innovations that treat up to 1 million patients globally. His landmark development was the NeuroTherm range of radiofrequency lesion generators to combat acute pain, which remains the foundation stone of Morgan IAT to this day. The success of NeuroTherm has allowed Sue & Howard to build a business based on the ethos of making products that “make an impact on society and change people’s lives for the better”.

Other notable inventions at Morgan include Salurate, a home screening technology for hypertensive disorders that affect millions of women and babies worldwide, & Zeus, a non-invasive anti-snoring device launching in January 2022.

Morgan IAT’s teams & its partners wish to extend their congratulations to Sue & Howard for these richly-deserved honours, and wish them both continued success into 2022. The official ceremony will take place later in the year.
