Midas Pattern Company, one of the UK’s leading polyurethane RIM moulding companies, has started the New Year off with a bang.  January 2021 saw the Bedford based company take delivery of a very large HAAS CNC machining centre and announce that they are now carbon net-zero.

The new HAAS VF-11/40 machine, manufactured by the US based Automation Company famed for setting up a new Formula One racing team, arrived after HAAS managed to secure the deal with Midas’ MD, Alan Rance, back in April 2020.

‘This latest investment will add valuable capacity to our company, helping us react faster and push boundaries on scale and complexity within our niche manufacturing process. We feel proud to be one of only a handful of companies in the South of England able to invest in such an enormous machine, especially in current times.

Weighing in at an impressive 15,150 KG and occupying over 7.2 M by 2.2M of factory floor space, this beast of a machine is one of the largest CNC machines manufactured by HAAS and has the capability of machining parts as big as 3m by 1m by 0.7m.

Midas are best known for producing very large polyurethane enclosures and housings (up to 3m in size) for the scientific and medical sectors. Trading for over 30 years and providing employment to 75 staff, they joined many other UK manufacturing companies in keeping production running throughout 2020, helping protect the NHS. At the same time, Midas made significant progress, reducing their carbon footprint and environmental impact to move towards carbon net-zero manufacturing company.

Decades in front of the 2050 Governments pledge to be net-zero, Midas have created the blueprint for other small manufacturing companies to follow. Besides taking care of their own carbon reductions, the ambitious company has gone one step further and from the 1st January 2021 will mitigate ALL embedded carbon within their tooling and mouldings – an action made possible by partnering with a local reforestation scheme.

Midas customers no longer need worry about the time and cost burden of calculating embedded content in Midas products, moving them one step closer to carbon neutrality in their businesses.
