Rautomead Implements Social Distancing Technology to Reduce the Risks of COVID-19 in the Workplace

Established in 1978, Rautomead Limited has evolved to become the world’s leading and most experienced supplier of continuous casting technology for non-ferrous alloys. Based in Dundee, Scotland, Rautomead designs and manufactures machinery to produce wire and cabling for critical applications exporting their products worldwide.

Following the COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions, Rautomead put the safety of all their employees at the forefront of their considerations in returning to normal working capacity. After implementing extensive manual controls, Rautomead turned to technology to give better assurance to the effectiveness of their controls.

SAFE-DISTANCE – social distancing and contact tracing technology

To support the safe return of their staff, Rautomead’s Managing Director, Brian Frame, acted quickly when he learned about available technology to help with social distancing and contact tracing challenges. Having learned about the SAFE-DISTANCE application from Reactec Ltd, Rautomead swiftly, and with considerable ease, implemented the technology.

SAFE-DISTANCE includes a wrist-worn device that uses radio signals to measure the distance between devices, sending alerts to the user if they stray too close to a colleague;  it also collects data that is presented automatically to managers on hosted informative analytics.

Rautomead’s Brian Frame said “we have initially introduced a skeleton return of staff to our site and SAFE-DISTANCE has certainly helped enhance our existing policies and procedures, such as 2 metre markers and signage. The alerts are definitely a great reminder to our employees about straying too close to one another.”

The SAFE-DISTANCE Analytics reports have also been widely used. “The Analytics have been extremely useful for us,” continued Brian Frame. “The reports were showing frequencies of extended contact in certain areas, such as the Stores area, therefore the data allowed us to review and amend the layout of the space.”

SAFE-DISTANCE not only acts as a personal monitor, but is a fully integrated GDPR compliant SAAS offering, which allows for contact tracing, or track and trace, of symptomatic employees if required.

Brian Frame added “SAFE-DISTANCE is there to protect our employees, and everyone thinks it’s great. The support we’ve had from Reactec has been very good and the technology is certainly doing what it set out to do.”
