It has been announced that there is to be an international centre for manufacturing expertise opening neat to Glasgow Airport. The investment in order to open this facility is expected to be in the region of £65 million. The new National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland will work towards offering support to businesses across the country as well as working to attract investment.
The plans that have been released so far show that Strathclyde University will be the anchor university for this new Institute, which will be located at Inchinnan in Renfrewshire which is next to Glasgow International Airport on the M8. The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement about the new centre for manufacturing expertise in Scotland alongside the Economy Secretary Keith Brown. The news was released during a visit that they have made to the Rolls-Royceâs manufacturing facility which is also based Inchinnan.
Rolls Royce is a founding member of the Advanced Forming Research Centre at the University of Strathclyde and it is great news to see further investment into the manufacturing industry in this area. This new facility will an industry-led international centre for expertise and will help companies across Scotland to embrace a range of new manufacturing techniques which will then go on to support the cutting edge research that can help develop the skills of the workforce.
Inchinnan has been pinpointed as a vital gateway to the larger global market due to its proximity to airports and it is hoped that this investment in the area will help to breathe new life into Scotlandâs proud tradition of manufacturing and engineering. The new centre will sit on the Clydeside; however, it is thought that the benefits of the new National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland will create opportunities that will be felt across Scotland. The Scottish Government will be investing £48 million into the creation of this new institute, with £8 million being invested from the University of Strathclyde.
