200 Projects Carried out Across Britain as Part of their Railway Upgrade Plan

Network Rail have announced that over the course of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend there will be more than 200 projects carried out across Britain as part of their Railway Upgrade Plan. There will be an investment of £70 million across Britain during this holiday period.

The work will be carried out by over 13,000 rail workers over the four-day period. The work will take place on some of the country’s largest infrastructure projects. These projects include Crossrail, as there will be work carried out on the routes out of London Liverpool Street in order to prepare for the Elizabeth line services that will begin in 2018. There will also be significant work to the Thameslink Programme, with improvements planned between London Charring Cross, London Cannon Street and London Bridge. There will also be major works at Waterloo, where there will be a number of tracks renewed. There will also be a continuation of the work on the Northern Hub, with the Ordsall Chord project expected to have work carried out over the Easter holiday. The West of England will also have work carried out over this period, with Bath Spa station experiencing some modernisation to accommodate longer trains in the future.

Various other upgrades a scheduled to be carried out over all the bank holidays in 2017. By working during these bank holidays it reduced the disruption caused by passengers as they will see a reduced number of passengers using the railway and will not impede everyday commuters.

Network Rail are assuring those who plan on using the railway over the Easter period that 95% of services will be unaffected by the work being carried out. Of course it is better to plan head when travelling just in case, to avoid the 5% of services that will be affected by the projects.
