Laystall Engineering, a historic Wolverhampton-based manufacturer, is investing in on-site energy generation as part of its commitment to reduce its environmental impact and improving operational efficiency.
With origins dating back to 1903, Laystall Engineering has built a reputation for excellence in manufacturing, previously supplying world-renowned crankshafts for motorsport and engine components for Rolls-Royce. Today, the company specialises in hydraulic cylinders and engine cylinder liner manufacturing, serving major clients such as Niftylift, JCB, Caterpillar and Wartsila.
Supported by a six-figure funding package from Lloyds through its Clean Growth Finance Initiative, Laystall Engineering has implemented a series of measures, including the installation of a large-scale (740 kWp) solar panel roof. The project also involved re-cladding the company’s premises to enhance insulation and energy efficiency, helping to reduce overall energy consumption.
The decision to invest in solar energy is part of the team’s plans to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering operational costs. By generating its own electricity through solar power, the company expects to cut its carbon emissions by 52% while making long-term savings on bills. The full year reduction is forecast to be 120 tons of CO2. They have also completed a sitewide conversion to high efficiency LED lighting.
Laystall Engineering’s efforts align with industry-wide trends toward the evolution of manufacturing practices, as more businesses seek to increase energy resilience. The company also plans to explore the introduction of smart monitoring systems to optimise energy usage across its operations.
The firm has banked with Lloyds since 2008 and has maintained a strong relationship with the bank’s local team, which has supported the business in securing the necessary funding for this investment.
The company, which employs 85 people, aims to continue expanding its processes, with a long-term goal to reduce its carbon footprint and explore additional renewable energy solutions.
Martin Bowers, Managing Director at Laystall Engineering, said: “We have been looking at ways to improve our energy efficiency for several years, and with rising energy costs, this investment in solar energy makes both environmental and commercial sense. The funding from Lloyds has been instrumental in allowing us to take this step toward a more sustainable future.”
Nash Lal, Relationship Director at Lloyds, commented: “Laystall Engineering is a great example of a British manufacturer taking proactive steps towards operational robustness. We are proud to support their journey and look forward to seeing the business continue to grow.”
