QED Environmental Launches Portable Methane Detector for Landfill Applications

QED Huberg SEM5000 - portable methane detector

QED Environmental Systems Inc. has announced the launch of the Huberg SEM5000, a powerful, field-proven portable methane detector for landfill surface emissions monitoring.

The SEM5000 is the latest addition to QED’s popular Huberg range of gas analyzers and detectors. Built around LASER-based tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TLDAS) technology, the SEM5000 provides fast and precise readings at levels as low as 1ppm, with zero cross-sensitivity to other gases.

With a response time of below 2 seconds, technicians are able to accurately pinpoint the location of leaks during walkover surveys, making the SEM5000 the ideal solution for landfill surface emissions monitoring, wellhead and surface penetration leak detection, environmental compliance surveys, or methane hot spot detection.

Designed for the field, the SEM5000 features a rugged IP65/NEMA4 enclosure, with the entire device weighing just 2.9lbs – half as much as comparative technologies – allowing it to be easily carried by a sole operator.

The SEM5000 is able to warm up in as little as 30 to 60 seconds, and features a field-swappable 10-hour battery, providing enough power for a full working day and minimizing the need for back-to-base charging. ATEX Zone 1 certification allows the instrument to be used in hazardous environments, with an operational range between -13°F and 122°F.

James Jones, Head of Gas Analyzer and Detection Products at QED, said: “The SEM5000 is built with the needs of technicians working in the field in mind – it’s fast, accurate, and has been designed specifically for the outdoor environment.

“Ultimately, the SEM5000 aims to make methane detection as simple as possible – minimal downtime, no additional devices required, and no difficulty generating reports. Operators need only walk their route, and the SEM5000 will handle the rest.”

Equipped with GPS, Bluetooth, and QED’s bespoke SEMSoft software, the SEM5000 allows users to easily manage data and generate highly accurate reports for compliance, with the seamless transfer of readings to a PC, tablet, or mobile device for reporting and analysis.

The SEM5000 can be used for up to two years before it requires factory calibration, which is handled through the QED Express™ servicing programme.

With a flat rate for complete calibration and repairs, free return freight, and a 10-day turnaround time no matter the location, QED Express™ keeps the instrument in peak working condition all year round.

James concluded: “The SEM5000 is placed to deliver a step-change in the way that the landfill industry approaches methane detection. No matter what the specific application may be, the SEM5000 is the all-in-one solution to ensure quick, accurate, and hassle-free results. If you’re monitoring methane, look no further than the SEM5000.”
