WH Davis is set to fulfil its landmark export deal supported by UKEF, supplying 150 freight wagons to Ireland as part of the country’s ambitious rail freight expansion strategy.

Based in Shirebrook, WH Davis is the UK’s sole remaining independent railway wagon manufacturer. Backed by UKEF, this monumental deal marked the company’s first international order in 20 years.

A cornerstone employer within the ex-mining village for decades, WH Davis has now expanded its workforce by 25%, creating 20 new skilled jobs and sustaining employment growth in the local community. The €44 million contract was made possible through UK Export Finance’s Bond Support Scheme.

Tim Reid at UK Export Finance said:

“The partnership between UKEF and WH Davis demonstrates exactly what can be achieved when government works alongside ambitious British manufacturers. After 20 years away from international markets, WH Davis is now exporting again, and the benefits are being felt across the local community.

“This deal isn’t just about one contract. It’s about creating quality jobs regionally, strengthening a business that has been at the heart of its community for generations, and showcasing the fact that UK manufacturers can compete and win on the global stage.

“We’re proud to have played our part in this British success story, and we look forward to supporting WH Davis as they pursue further export opportunities.”
