Metsä Spring New Wood Fibre Punnet Series for Fresh Produce

Metsa Spring uncoated fibre punnet series

The award-winning Muoto Uncoated Fibre Series is expanding by introducing the first versions of two different punnets, designed specifically for the fresh food product segment. The new products are developed to match the requirements of the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and will enable producers to switch from single-use plastics to alternative solutions when packing fresh products.

Espoo, Finland (December 18th, 2025)Metsä Group’s innovation company, Metsä Spring, is advancing its moulded fibre packaging innovation with the launch of the new Muoto punnet products as a part of its Muoto Uncoated Fibre Series. The two different punnet sizes are designed for berries, fruits, and vegetables, offering punnets with two different sizes to match the specific product and customer needs. The punnets will be ready for market testing starting from January 2026.

“We welcome packers to join our pre-commercial sales phase, test, and co-develop the right solution for their needs. Our Muoto punnets are durable, plastic-free, fully recyclable, and meet the strict requirements of the upcoming PPWR regulation. As the new legislation will most likely come into effect in 2030, this is the prime time to start testing other solutions for packing fresh products,” says Tarja Heikkilä, Product Manager at Muoto.

According to a market study conducted by Muoto, in Europe, the overall packaging unit volume for fresh products is billions of units annually. Just firm berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries, require billions of packaging units every year. By replacing the current plastic packaging with products such as Muoto punnets, the industry can drastically decrease the volume of single-use plastics.

Made from renewable wood pulp, Muoto is fully recyclable and biodegradable[1]. The technology applied in Muoto products converts wet wood pulp into 3-dimensional packages without any intermediate steps, meaning that the new low-carbon footprint products would be ready to be shipped to end customers as such. In addition to being easy to mould into different shapes, Muoto is lightweight and strong.

Muoto products can be used in various applications, from takeaway food service to industrial packing. In early September 2025, the Muoto Twin Uncoated Fibre range won a ScanStar award, the Nordic competition for innovative and sustainable packaging. The award has been organised annually since 1969 by the Scandinavian Packaging Association. The Twin Uncoated Fibre series also won the Circular and Sustainable Packaging category at the Packnorth Award 2025, presented during EMPACK Stockholm on 1-2 October.

“We are extremely happy to launch yet another scalable Muoto packaging solution. Our first pilots with industrial partners and customers have been very encouraging, and since last summer, we’ve already seen other Muoto products on the shelves of big retail shops, available for consumers. The punnet series is a great match for the market’s need to find alternatives to the current solutions that will not match with the upcoming EU regulation that will take effect in Europe soon,” says Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring.
