Cleanova to Supply High-Capacity Filtration Systems for Gato do Mato FPSO

Cleanova has won the contract to supply its high-capacity filtration systems for a new Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO)

Cleanova has won the contract to supply its high-capacity filtration systems for a new Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, destined for deployment at the Gato Do Mato oilfield, around 200km south of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Operating in waters approximately 2000m deep, the FPSO will be capable of producing up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day, with a storage capacity of 850,000 barrels. It will also produce up to 384 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. Cleanova’s filtration systems will be essential in maintaining product quality and operational efficiency by preventing contamination and equipment damage.

Macer Braidwood, Global Market Manager, Cleanova, says: “Contamination reduction is central to driving up product quality and optimising productivity in oil & gas operations today, particularly where resources are more difficult to reach. Our high-capacity filters are ideal for such applications because they are designed for heavy dirt loads, meaning fewer filter changes, while offering extremely fine filtration for maximum particulate capture. The polypropylene filter elements in these systems are only five microns, which is roughly 20 times thinner than a human hair.”

Under the contract, which was confirmed in May this year, Cleanova will supply sulphate removal units (SRU) and cleaning-in-place (CIP) filters for the vessel. Each filtration system is capable of removing high volumes of solid contaminant between 1-90 microns to β5000 efficiency levels while ensuring minimal impact on process parameters. The SRU will remove sulfates from the seawater before it is injected into the oil reservoir. This process helps prevent scale formation and souring, which can harm production. The CIP unit will filter out particulates and residue dislodged during cleaning, preventing contaminants from re-entering the system.

Each Cleanova HC Filter cartridge has a unique layered and pleated media structure, optimised for maximum particle capture and absolute-rated efficiency over a broad spectrum of particulate sizes. Its outside-to-inside flow design, paired with a positive O-Ring seal, ensures effective removal of contaminants and a higher dirt-holding capacity, extending service life. The cartridge is designed for easy removal and replacement, preventing any trapped particles from accidentally falling into the clean side of the filter. Filter replacement is further simplified by the inclusion of 90” diameter closures – the largest that Cleanova has supplied to date.

The SRU and CIP filter systems are due for delivery in July, 2026.
