Lightfoot Comment EV Funding is Welcome, But More Needed

charging fund

“The £30m depot charging fund is a welcome move, because this infrastructure is critical for commercial fleets with fixed routes and overnight downtimes. Lightfoot data shows these operations are among the most viable to electrify, as long as charging is reliable, accessible, and cost-effective.

“But it’s a modest sum given the scale of the infrastructure challenge across the country. Many operators will still find the economics of electrification difficult without wider support.

“What fleets need most is confidence. Confidence that infrastructure will keep pace, total cost of ownership makes sense, and future policy won’t shift unpredictably. This announcement helps, but needs to be part of a broader, stable roadmap – something we haven’t had in a while.

“It needs to be remembered too that electrification isn’t just about plugs and grants. Smart energy management, driver behaviour and route planning play huge roles in ensuring a return on investment, and being operationally effective. Technology such as Lightfoot helps bridge that gap, making EV transitions practical, not just possible.”
