The new Frecciarossa 1000 presented today in Berlin, during InnoTrans 2024, by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Edoardo Rixi, the Italian Ambassador to Germany, Amando Varicchio, Trenitalia CEO, Luigi Corradi, and Hitachi Rail Group CEO, Giuseppe Marino, will start travelling on Italian tracks by 2025.
Presentation of the new Frecciarossa 1000 at Innotrans 2024
“It will be the most high-performance train on the continent”, states Rixi, “and will help build the framework of high-speed rail travel in Europe. FS proves to be a group at the forefront of rail transport. The creation of this train was made possible through the strengthening of the Italian production chain, in Berlin with 223 exhibitors, through Italy’s investments in the rail sector. Today we consider ourselves to be a world leader in an extremely high-tech sector and the Frecciarossa 1000 is the symbol of our view towards the mobility of the future.”
“For Trenitalia”, states Corradi, “the tourism sector has grown a lot this summer, with a 10% increase in passengers compared to pre-Covid levels.”
Frecciarossa 1000: new features
The new generation of the Frecciarossa 1000 features several innovations, including recyclability increased to 97.1% (+2.7% compared to the previous fleet), greater reliability thanks to improved traction system efficiency, and improved energy efficiency.
Frecciarossa 1000: investments
The new Frecciarossa is part of an order placed by Trenitalia with Hitachi for the delivery of 36 ETR1000 trains, which could possibly extend to a further 10 units, reaching a total of 46 trains and a total value of more than €1.3 billion. The first deliveries will start next year and continue until 2028, with an average of about eight trains per year.
Frecciarossa 1000: abroad
The Frecciarossa 1000 is designed and built to travel in Italy and on the European rail networks of France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Below is the transcript of the interview to Mr. Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of FS Italiane Group:
The FS Group is at InnoTrans, in Berlin, to talk not only about the present, but also the future.
We are certainly a key operator in the market and the railway sector in Europe and so, as one of the major players, if we were a train, we would be a locomotive. We are certainly one of the key players within the entire sphere of economic operators working in the rail industry.
It is an important exhibition, and we are all here objectively. It was also an opportunity for me to meet the other heads of railway companies, who are our fellow members in trade associations and with whom we outline suggestions to European institutions and regulators.
It is an international fair, and the whole world – or a large part of it – is here. How is the relationship between FS Group and the rest of the world?
It is very good, we have an international presence that is already significant, we operate in several countries, I won’t mention them all, but Germany, for example, provides us with a turnover of around €1 billion, so very significant, but we also operate in France, Spain, Greece and several other countries.
Our relationship with other organisations, including those in the rail industry, is quite good, we collaborate on shared projects, and we are certainly appreciated in the countries we operate in. Being a popular brand with an Italian style also makes a difference.
So, in truth: so you’ve walked around the stands a bit, is there a good example here you could copy?
Yes: Ferrovie dello Stato!
