Third International Quality Awards Open for Entries
Employees in the manufacturing quality profession are being invited to submit their entries for the 2019 International Quality Awards by Wednesday 31 July. The free-to-enter International Quality Awards, hosted by the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) in partnership with leading global certification body NQA, celebrate the achievements of exceptional quality professionals and auditors in all sectors around the world. Spanning six major categories, including Emerging Talent Award and Quality Organisation of the Year Award, the International Quality Awards are open to all CQI members and IRCA-registered auditors as well as non-members of the CQI, teams and organisations. This year’s event will take place at a landmark point in the CQI’s history: its centenary. To mark this anniversary, the awards will celebrate the rich and diverse history of the quality profession over the last 100 years. The International Quality Awards provide applicants with an opportunity to showcase their contribution to the quality management profession, inspire others by sharing their stories, and boost their profile in the global quality sector. Last year Khar Voen (Carmen) Chin, PCQI from Alstom Hong Kong Limited, won the Emerging Talent Award for her role in improving supplier training, warehouse audits and the installation of steel bracketry that carried signalling equipment under train carriages. Her work continues to contribute to ensuring the safety of millions of passengers who use Hong Kong’s railway network. Vincent Desmond, CEO of the CQI, said: “In this interconnected world, the quality profession is playing an increasingly important role in safeguarding consumers, protecting the environment and ensuring compliance in global supply chains. It is important, therefore, that we continue to reward quality and auditing talent and to laud their contribution to the future of quality in their organisations and society. “In 2018 we received entries from quality professionals in the Republic of Latvia, Qatar, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, to name just a few. We are proud of our global links and reputation and would encourage everyone working in quality to submit an entry – wherever in the world they might be.” The International Quality Awards will take place on 27 November 2019 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in Central London.
Berkeley Engineering Consultants Receives Queen’s Award
The Queen’s Award for International Trade has been handed to Berkeley Engineering Consultants (BEC), a single access point for specialist engineering services for the global oil and gas sector. This is a major achievement for the company as only 200 companies have been recognised for these Awards out of more than 4 million that had registered. “Winning The Queen’s Award represents another major milestone in our journey. We have built our success on offering an innovative and flexible approach to supporting our clients who are some of the world’s biggest oil & gas companies. Key to that is being physically close to them and we continue to open offices in strategic locations to support their needs. A very special thank you to each of the employees and their families for their belief in the owners and their ideals,” said BEC’s CEO, Irteza Piracha. The Queen’s Awards take place once a year and are the most prestigious awards for UK businesses, recognising outstanding achievement among UK-based companies in four categories which also include Innovation, Promoting Opportunity (through Social Mobility) and Sustainable Development. One of just a handful of organisations supporting the oil and gas sector to have been recognised in The Queen’s Awards this year, BEC is a strategic partner to major names in oil and gas including Saudi Aramco and their joint venture partners, providing process engineering services which enable its clients to select the safest, most efficient and cost-effective designs for their processing facilities. Its activities encompass extraction, refining, petrochemical and petrochemical processing projects. Based in London with an engineering office in Reading, BEC employs engineering specialists delivering high value optimal cost driven client solutions. It operates from facilities worldwide including Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and South Korea, and opened a new dedicated office in Oman earlier in 2019 to support this rapidly growing market. Now in their 53rd year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the UK, with winning businesses able to use the esteemed Queen’s Awards emblem for the next five years. BEC will celebrate its award during a royal reception for Queen’s Awards winners in the summer. Manufacturing & Engineering Magazine | The Home of Manufacturing Industry News

AME shortlisted for Guardian University Award
AME, otherwise known as The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering is a collaboration between Coventry University and Unipart Manufacturing. In part funded by the HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England), AME creates a stage for collaboration between academia and industry where R&D can be carried out in a âliveâ manufacturing environment. It forms what has been termed the first academic faculty “on the floor” and has proven so successful that it has been shortlisted at the Guardian University Awards in the Business Partnership category. The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering’s 1700m2 hub for manufacturing in Coventry boasts space and facilities to carry out large-scale R&D projects. Recent developments have looked at revolutionary powertrain solutions targeted at the rail, aerospace and automotive sectors. AME director Dr Carl Perrin was delighted about the award nomination. However, he highlighted a number of detractors who felt industry and academia couldn’t coexist harmoniously. This award is proof that they were wrong. It hasn’t been plain sailing, he says, acknowledging that it took time to get two very different cultures to work together. However, what has ultimately been created is a “step change in manufacturing education” and will provide the country with the capacity to make tangible commercial gains from its innovation and expertise. Perrin believes much of the praise given to AME over the last few months has been about its potential going forward. He said, a year and a half after the facility opened it is delivering “innovative learning” while “forging relationships with the supply chain” and establishing “lightweight technology” in the market which is creating work and jobs. Indeed, AME is committed to arming UK industry with the competitive advantage to trade globally, while creating and generating real economic value. In the Guardian University Awards it is up against universities from Nottingham and Leeds with the winner announced on March 16.
