British car manufacturer McLaren is set to revamp its F1 supercar from 1993 with the development of a new GT version from its Special Operations division.

McLaren has released designs of the new F1-inspired concept, which will include detailing that defined the former fastest car in the world, such as the three seat layout and the snorkel style roof air box.

The car maker is aiming to make the new version the world’s fastest GT car, rather than trying to break records as they had done with the original model.

The new version is rumoured to be fitter with McLaren’s 3.8 litre V8 turbocharged engine, which produces more than 700bhp, and is anticipated to smash the 200mph barrier which would make it faster than McLaren’s current GT model, the 650S.

Similarly to the original F1 car, the cockpit will have one central position with two passenger seats set back either side, which will give the driver a racing view of the road, a feature that was unique to the 1993 version.

The name of the new design is yet to be confirmed, although it is believed that it will make a reference to F1, in tribute to the original design.

The 1993 F1 supercar broke the record for the fastest production car ever, by reaching a speed of 230mph which was not broken until 2005 when the Bugatti Veyron reached a phenomenal 253mph.

The 1993 F1 model is still the world’s fastest ever naturally-aspirated car and is also currently the sixth fastest production car, of which only 64 models of the original car were made.

The new model is the latest in a series of high specification one off or limited edition machines produced by the company and built by MSO.

There are plans to build 64 models of the new car, once again following in the footsteps of the original.
