Kasai Celebrates 35 Years In Sunderland

SUNDERLAND, UK, 10th JULY, 2026 – ONE of Sunderland’s longest-standing automotive manufacturers is celebrating 35 years of investment, innovation and partnership in the city.

Kasai UK has marked the milestone with a special anniversary event bringing together employees, partners and civic leaders to reflect on the company’s journey since establishing its UK operations in Sunderland in 1991.

Representatives from Kasai, along with supporters from Sunderland City Council, The Embassy of Japan and Consulate General of Japan planted a Red Japanese Maple Tree to mark the occasion.

The tree was chosen to represent endurance, balance and long-term growth. It will sit alongside the two Cherry Blossom trees originally planted in Kasai’s grounds, which symbolise renewal, prosperity and positivity.

In addition, and in recognition of parent company Kasai Kogyo Japan’s 80th anniversary this year, a commemorative space has also been established for employees and visitors. The space provides an opportunity to reflect on the company’s heritage, acknowledge the contribution of all those who have supported its success, and recognise the achievements that have shaped its development. It will serve as a lasting reminder of Kasai’s shared history and the future the company continues to build.

From its Washington facility, Kasai UK manufactures interior trim components for some of the world’s best-known automotive brands, employing just under 500 people and producing more than 1.1 million Door trims and more than nine million Pillar and Trunk hard trims each year.

Over the past three and a half decades, the company has become a key part of Sunderland’s internationally recognised automotive cluster, continually investing in its people, facilities and sustainable manufacturing processes. Most recently, the company invested in new solvent-free adhesive technology to significantly reduce carbon emissions at its Washington plant, helping it move closer to achieving its ambitious environmental targets.

Jill Usher, Managing Director of Kasai UK, said: “Reaching our 35th anniversary is an incredibly proud moment for everyone at Kasai UK.

“We’ve built a fantastic business in Sunderland thanks to the dedication of our employees, the support of our customers and the strong relationships we’ve developed with our partners across the region, including the city council.

“Over the last 35 years we’ve continued to evolve alongside the automotive industry, investing in new technologies, developing our workforce and embracing more sustainable ways of manufacturing. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited about what the future holds.”

Throughout its history, Kasai has worked closely with Sunderland City Council and regional partners to support investment in the plant and strengthen the region’s reputation as a centre for advanced manufacturing.

Councillor James Jackson, cabinet member for Business, Housing and Regeneration at Sunderland City Council, was among the guests invited to attend Kasai’s celebration event, recognising the business’ significant contribution to the city’s economy.

Cllr Jackson said: “Kasai UK has been an important part of Sunderland’s manufacturing story for 35 years and this anniversary is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everything the company has achieved.

“Businesses like Kasai have helped establish Sunderland as one of Europe’s leading automotive cities, creating skilled jobs, investing in innovation and demonstrating a long-term commitment to our community.

“On behalf of the city, I would like to congratulate everyone at Kasai on this remarkable milestone and wish them every success for the future.”
